Sustainability Definition

What?
Sustainability is using, developing and protecting social and natural resources in a manner that allows people to meet their current needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs.

Why?
Because it is the right thing to do.  For over a decade, many of the world’s corporations have produced voluntary sustainability principles.  The most common reason has been to assure customers/owners, employees, rating agencies, and resource agencies that environmental and social matters are taken seriously and responded to in a cost-effective and responsible manner.  Today, stakeholders have expectations that companies will develop sustainability principles.  Recent regulatory actions and corporate disclosure requirements clearly reflect these expectations.  Additionally, there may be opportunities to benefit the bottom line through reducing waste (either time or materials) and increasing efficiency.
