Chelan and Douglas PUDs will collaborate on fish-monitoring work

News Release

Antennas to monitor downstream passage of small tagged fish will be installed in the Chelan County PUD surface collector and bypass system at Rocky Reach Dam to help Douglas County PUD measure fish survival at its Wells Dam Project in 2010.

Chelan PUD commissioners approved an agreement between the two PUDs Monday afternoon that allows Douglas PUD to install a passive integrated transponder (PIT) system at Rocky Reach. Douglas PUD will be responsible for all costs of installing the system. The two PUDs will then maintain the system and split the operation costs after the first year. Chelan PUD will benefit by having more information it can use for its own fish survival studies.

Similar to Chelan PUD, Douglas PUD has a Habitat Conservation Plan for its Wells Dam Hydro Project that requires testing every 10 years to verify fish survival. Installing the PIT system will allow Douglas PUD to duplicate tests that were done in 2000 when Chelan PUD had its initial prototype bypass system in place that was eventually replaced by the permanent system in 2003.
