Tips for keeping cool as temperatures rise

Using energy wisely can help you save money and stay comfortable as summer temperatures climb.
Chelan County PUD has adequate power supplies to meet summer power demand, but extended periods of 100-degree days can put a strain on the system. Taking small steps to save energy can help lessen that strain and also help customers save on their power bill.
“The bottom line is, keep your house tight and dark so it will be cooler starting in the morning and it will stay cooler, longer,” said Mark Wiser, PUD conservation manager.
Among the most effective ways to save energy during a heat wave are:
- Make sure your air conditioner filters are clean
- Set air conditioner thermostat as high as comfortably possible
- Don’t set the temperature extra low when you first turn on the air conditioner. Setting it lower won’t cool any quicker
- Use an interior fan with the air conditioner to move cool air through the house or office, rather than setting the thermostat lower
- Move lamps or TV’s away from thermostats so that the heat they generate doesn’t trigger air conditioning to turn on before it’s really needed
- Close curtains throughout the day in rooms that get sun, particularly if that’s the room with the cooling thermostat
