SNAP Power in Chelan County
Solar panels on the roof of Orchard Middle School in Wenatchee.
Clean, renewable, low-cost hydropower has been the essence of Chelan County PUD for decades. Now the new renewables -- solar, wind and small hydro -- are complimenting that legacy.
Thanks to the SNAP program, Chelan County is one of the leading solar producers in Washington state. This is due in large part to the generosity of Alcoa, McCandlish Electric of Wenatchee, and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 191. The Alcoa Community Solar Endowment and electrical union paid for the installation of 36 solar stations at schools and nonprofit agencies in Chelan County between 2003 and 2006.
Customer contributions to SNAP are benefiting the schools and nonprofit agencies, providing a lasting source of revenue for educational and community programs.
