River Road Fire Safety Improvements

2025 construction is planned on River Road: Updates coming next Spring

WHAT:
A Chelan County PUD contractor has completed construction activities in the first and mid-sections of the River Road overhead to underground conversion project. The project to convert overhead infrastructure to underground will reduce the risk of wildfire ignition during extreme weather conditions.

WHEN AND WHAT TO EXPECT:

  • The contractor will perform dirt work and install conduit, and electrical equipment (duct and vault). The PUD will pull new wire through the conduit later in the project.
  • Work on the first section was completed in 2023.
  • Work on the mid-section was completed in 2024.
  • Work on the final section is planned for 2025.
  • We expect some traffic impacts. Please watch for flaggers and signage.
  • Working hours are generally Monday – Friday, 7 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Project Background

Chelan PUD identified the overhead utilities along this section of River Road as a candidate for undergrounding because it meets several criteria for fire risk and constructability. This project will help reduce the risk of wildfire ignition during extreme weather conditions.

This project is part of a larger plan to reduce fire risk in the most vulnerable areas of the county. That plan includes equipment upgrades and pruning trees and shrubs away from lines.

The PUD hosted a Neighborhood Meeting on June 11, 2022 in Plain to inform stakeholders about the project and discuss potential impacts to properties.
