Sydney Witten: My name is Sydney Witten and I’m a journeyman hydro mechanic for Chelan County PUD.

Sydney Witten: As a journeyman hydro mechanic, we fix and maintain the facilities around the dam and fix and maintain hydroelectric turbines.
[Sydney is reaching over some piping to take a fluid sample from a piece of equipment using a jar on the end of a long piece of metal.]
Sydney Witten: My experience in the apprenticeship program was amazing.
Sydney Witten: It teaches you things that you can’t learn anywhere else, that are directly pertaining to the jobs that we do here at the dam.

Sydney Witten: I enjoy my job being a hydro mechanic because every day is different. We do different activities – it’s never the same. It’s always a constant change of pace and we get to take things apart and put it back together.

Sydney Witten: This career is for the type of person that is hardworking, takes pride in what they do, needs to get along well with others, have the willingness and the desire to show up early and stay late and go the extra mile.

Derek Williams: My name is Derick Williams and I’m a journeyman lineman.
[Derek is in a lift bucket with another person inspecting and working on power lines.]
Derek Williams: A journeyman lineman goes out and repairs power lines the high line, and builds new lines so your house has power.
[Derek is climbing down off of a bucket truck]
Derek Williams: My favorite thing about the job is being outside, working everywhere in the county and physical work. It pays really great, so that’s also a benefit.

Derek Williams: The skills that somebody would need for this job are you need to be good with math, you know there’s a lot of things in our jobs that involve math, and you also need to have a lot of self-motivation, drive and willingness to take responsibility. They guy next to you has to be able to trust you.

Derek Williams: If I could tell somebody one thing to get into the apprenticeship, or about the apprenticeship, is that drive is everything.

Eddy Kavanaugh: I’m Eddy Kavanaugh. I’m a apprentice power systems wireman.

Eddy Kavanaugh: We do everything in the substations; transformer maintenance, LTC maintenance, maintain the breakers and all the control work in the substations.

Eddy Kavanaugh: I wanted to be an apprentice at Chelan PUD because it’s a great future.

Eddy Kavanaugh: There’s always 80 hours on a paycheck, good retirement while I still get ah get to do the work that I like.

Eddy Kavanaugh: As far as being an electrician, it’s about as good as it gets.

Eddy Kavanaugh: This program has been very valuable to me. It’s the best way to learn, you get 40 hours on the job training and then you get your six hours of classroom training in the evening. It’s the best of both.

Eddy Kavanaugh: If you’re looking to be a hand in the electrical field, this is the way to go.
